Alsen and the surrounding townships of Garfield and Prairie Center define this section of southeastern South Dakota during the late 1960s. The landscape is a structured grid of agricultural sections, punctuated by localized community centers and rural infrastructure. Genealogists and local historians will find significant value in the distribution of several rural schoolhouses, including Newdale Sch and Cleveland Sch, alongside the Rockfield Cem. The eastern portion of the sheet is dominated by the course of Brule Creek, which winds through Union County State Park, a recreation area featuring a Campground and various Gravel Pits. Further south, the settlement of Greenfield is marked by its own Greenfield Sch, while a Townhall in Garfield township serves as a civic landmark for the local farming population.
