Fremont National Forest dominates this section of the Oregon high country, where the landscape is defined by its extensive network of seasonal springs and meadows. The area around Bear Valley and Bear Valley Canyon is particularly dense with hydrologic features, including Bug Spring, Deer Spring, and Mud Spring. This water network supported local grazing and forestry operations, as evidenced by the namesake Johnson Meadow and various flatland clearings such as Strawberry Flat.
