The coastal city of Arecibo dominates this northern Puerto Rican landscape, where the Rio Grande de Arecibo meets the Atlantic Ocean. By the late 2010s, the area reflects a complex mix of urban educational centers, such as the Universidad de Puerto Rico Arecibo and La Universidad del Este, alongside the natural marshlands of the Ciénaga Tiburones. The transportation network is anchored by the major thoroughfare of Expreso Jose de Diego, which cuts through the hills south of the city center.
