The arid ranchlands of Zapata County are defined by an intricate network of water management features, dominated by the northern reaches of the Falcon Reservoir along the Rio Grande. The settlement pattern is sparse, centered on the Morales - Sanchez Colonia and the Chihuahua Farm in the southwest. A legacy of localized water conservation for livestock is evident in the numerous tanks and dams scattered across the landscape, such as the Juan G Benavides Lake Dam and the Lopez Lake Dam.
