About this map

The town of Ashley anchors the southwestern corner of this McIntosh County landscape, serving as a hub for the surrounding agricultural prairie in the early 1980s. The map reveals a region defined by its numerous prairie potholes and larger water bodies, including Salt Lake and Kislingbury Lake, much of which is designated as a National Waterfowl Production Area. These protected wetlands, along with the Ashley State Game Management Area, illustrate the importance of the Central Flyway to this part of North Dakota. For local historians, the sheet preserves the location of several burial sites such as Emmans Cem, Ashley Cem, and a solitary Grave to the north. Transportation history is marked by the Old RR Grade cutting through the terrain, while modern infrastructure is represented by the Municipal Airport and a local Substation.
