Slumbering Hills and the prominent Awakening Peak dominate this corner of Humboldt County, where the desert floor transitions into steep, rugged topography. The settlement of Awakening sits at the base of these peaks, a focal point for the complex drainage systems of Havilah Gulch, Gaffney Gulch, and Siskiyou Gulch that carve through the landscape. To the east, the terrain levels out into the broad Silver State Valley, where Daveytown is located near the vast Daveytown Flat. The path of Sand Pass Rd provides the primary transit route through this portion of the Great Basin. The concentration of named gulches and canyons, including Humboldt Canyon, points to a long-standing history of land use and navigation centered on the rare water sources and topographical breaks in the range.
