Industrial and agrarian history converge along the Ware River in this survey of Central Massachusetts. The landscape is defined by the conversion of rail corridors into recreational paths, most notably the Mass Central Rail Trl and the Ware River Valley Rail Trl, which trace the routes once vital to the mill towns of South Barre and Barre Plains. The numerous small settlements, including Heald Village and Mill Village, suggest a legacy of local manufacturing powered by the surrounding waterways.
