Basin Mountain dominates the center of this landscape, surrounded by a complex system of drainage and small-scale water management. In this 2010 survey of the area south of Durango, the Animas River flows through the eastern corridor, shadowed by the Citizens Anomas Ditch and East Mesa Ditch. The terrain is marked by numerous named canyons, including Box Canyon and Sawmill Canyon, which feed into the primary creek systems.
