Sleeping Ute Mountain and Ute Peak dominate the southern half of this landscape, rising above a complex system of drainages and mesas in Montezuma County. The settlement of Battle Rock sits at a lower elevation near the center of the map, tucked between McElmo Canyon and the surrounding high ground of Hamilton Mesa and Goodman Point. This area shows a transition from high peaks to deeply eroded canyonlands, where ephemeral and seasonal water sources like Ute Spring and Littlewater Spring were critical for those navigating the terrain.
