About this map

The Canadian River carves a deep, winding course through this northeastern New Mexico landscape, defining the boundary between Mora and Harding counties. The terrain is characterized by a complex network of side canyons, including Cañon Blanco, Beaver Canyon, and Cañon Hondo, which feed into the river's dramatic incision. Much of the eastern portion of the map is part of the Kiowa National Grassland, a testament to the region's managed rangelands and conservation efforts. A small Cem (cemetery) located near the river at Upper Horseshoe Bend provides a rare genealogical marker in this otherwise sparsely populated ranching country. The intricate contour lines illustrate the sharp transitions from high plains to the sheltered canyon floors where seasonal drainages like Cañon Alamita and Cañon de la Cueva have sculpted the earth over millennia.
