The landscape is defined by parallel ridges like Chestnut Ridge, Pine Ridge, and Beaver Ridge, which dictated the layout of the high-security facilities and residential areas during the mid-20th century. Between these heights, Bethel Valley and Bear Creek Valley contain a high density of small family burial grounds, including Hembree Cem, Thacker Cem, and Bethel Cem, many of which predate the federal government's acquisition of the land.
