Big Flats and East Corning anchor this corridor along the Chemung River valley, where transportation infrastructure has historically shaped the landscape. The Chemung Feeder Canal remains a visible trace of nineteenth-century water transport, running parallel to the modern tracks of the Norfolk Southern railroad. The transition from industrial rail to modern aviation is marked by the expansive footprint of the Elmira/Corning Regional Airport in the east. Numerous family and community burial grounds, such as Miller Cem, Goff Cem, and the Whitney Cem, are scattered across the valley floor and rising hillsides. The northern terrain is defined by a series of named hollows, including Reasor Hollow and Eacher Hollow, which cut through the uplands near Martin Hill and Quackenbush Hill. Small settlements like Tompkins Corners and Post Creek populate the rural intersections north of the main valley corridor.
