The area is characterized by long, parallel elevations like Copper Ridge, Chestnut Ridge, and Bullrun Ridge, which separate agricultural corridors such as Raccoon Valley and Hinds Creek Valley. This topography dictated the placement of small communities including New Loyston, Paulette, and Melbourne.
