The Salmon River winds through the heart of this Lemhi County landscape, where the historic route of the Lewis And Clark Trl follows its banks. Much of the western terrain is protected within the Salmon National Forest, characterized by steep drainages like Napoleon Gulch and Maxwell Gulch. To the east, the topography transitions to the wider valley floor of Big Flat, where early agricultural development is evident through a network of irrigation works including the McNutt Ditch and Big Flat Ditch.
