Lake Superior borders the northern edge of this coastal survey, where the Black River meets the harbor in the Ottawa National Forest. This landscape is defined by its dramatic series of water features as the river descends toward the lake, passing over Rainbow Falls, Sandstone Falls, Gorge Falls, and Potawatomi Falls in quick succession. Further upstream, Manabezho Falls and Great Conglomerate Falls mark the river's path through the wooded terrain.

The presence of an Old RR Grade running inland suggests the area's history of timber extraction, now transitioned to recreation and conservation. Public access is centered around the Black River Harbor Campground and its associated Picnic Area, linked to the forest interior by Black River Road. Smaller drainages such as Nighthawk Creek, Ghost Creek, and Ignace Creek weave through the forest, feeding into the main river channel before it reaches the protected waters of Black River Harbor.
