Bonne Terre and its surrounding communities are positioned along the winding course of the Big River near the northeastern edge of the Saint Francois Mountains. This 2017 study illustrates a region characterized by a high density of burial sites and historical markers, including the curiously named Smallpox Cem and the Germania Cem. The landscape transitions from the urbanized corridors of Desloge and Highley Heights in the south to the residential developments around East Bonne Terre and the numerous artificial lakes like Lac Marseilles and Lac Emerald to the west.
