The Navajo Indian Reservation spans this high desert landscape, defined by the winding course of the San Juan River and the dramatic uplift of Comb Ridge. In the early 1960s, the region saw significant industrial activity, marked by the North Boundary Butte Oil Field and numerous flowing wells and drill holes across the Bench and Tohonadla areas.

Evidence of much earlier inhabitants remains visible at Poncho House and various cliff dwellings tucked into the canyons near Butler Wash. The terrain transitions from the deep incisions of San Juan Canyon to the broad elevations of Casa Del Eco Mesa. Remote landmarks such as Moses Rock and the sand dunes near Chinle Creek underscore the geological complexity of this corner of the Monument Valley region at the Utah-Arizona border.
