The Colorado River and the upper reaches of Lake Powell define the northwestern corner of this high-desert landscape in San Juan County. Much of the region is protected within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, where a complex system of drainage and erosion is evidenced by deep-cut features such as Gypsum Canyon, Palmer Canyon, and Bowdie Canyon. The terrain transitions from river-level elevations up to the expansive Dark Canyon Plateau and the Plateau Region, characterized by isolated high points like North Point and Lean-To Point.
