McElmo Canyon dominates this southwestern Colorado landscape, where the high desert terrain is defined by a network of deep drainages and elevated mesas. The drainage of McElmo Cr and its tributaries, including Littlewater Cr and E Mc Elmo Cr, have carved significant features like Cottonwood Canyon and Rincon Canyon into the plateau. Large landforms such as Cannon Ball Mesa and Hamilton Mesa provide a clear view of the structural geology typical of Montezuma County.
