About this map

The John Muir National Historic Site and the surrounding peaks of Mount Wanda and Mount Helen anchor the northeastern corner of this study, reflecting the transition from historic estate lands to suburban expansion. The landscape is defined by the high ridges of the Berkeley Hills and Sobrante Ridge, which separate the developing communities of Orinda and Lafayette from the large water catchments of Briones Reservoir and San Pablo Reservoir. These massive water features, along with the Mokelumne Aqueduct, illustrate the vital role this terrain plays in the region's infrastructure.
