Highland lies at the southern edge of this interior Arkansas landscape, where the ridges of the Ouachita National Forest dominate the terrain. The topography is defined by a series of prominent peaks and ridges, including the high point of Buck Knob, Fourche Mtn, and Brushy Knob. In the north, US Hwy 270 follows the winding path of Mill Cr through a valley between Mill Creek Mtn and the northern slopes of Buck Knob. Local history is anchored by the Lyons Cem, situated just off Dooley Rd near the forest boundary. The map illustrates a complex network of forest drainage systems, such as Hole in the Ground Cr and the headwaters of the Irons Fork, which carve through the elevations of Irons Fork Mtn and Grapevine Mtn.
