Ouachita National Forest dominates this section of the Arkansas highlands, where the rugged topography of the Ouachita Mountains dictates the path of both water and travel. The landscape is defined by significant ridges such as Mill Creek Mtn, Buck Knob, and Irons Fork Mtn, which separate the various drainages of Mill Cr and Irons Fork. This 2017 survey shows a network of forest roads and extensive recreation paths, including the Ouachita National Recreation Trail and several segments of the Fourche Mountain Trail. Evidence of earlier mountain life is preserved at Lyons Cem near the intersection of US Hwy 270 and Dooley Rd, while the community of Highland sits at the southern edge of the quadrangle. The map captures the specialized geography of the forest, including unique features like Hole in the Ground Cr and the high point of Mast Mtn.
