2020 Map of Buckhorn Spring

About this map

Buckhorn Spring and several other vital water sources define this high-altitude landscape in Beaver County. The terrain is dominated by the Indian Peak Range and the distinctive formation known as Elephant Back, which overlooks the northern stretches of Pine Valley. The distribution of Upper Indian Spring and Lower Indian Spring suggests a reliance on scattered perennial water points in an otherwise arid region. Drainage patterns are clearly marked by seasonal channels such as Antelope Wash and Turkey Wash, which feed into the larger system of Indian Creek. This 2020 topographic study shows the relationship between these remote springs and the land management boundaries of the Bureau of Land Management, which oversees much of this territory. The presence of Vance Spring and Meadow Spring at the edge of the valley floors indicates a landscape shaped by both geological uplift and the persistent hydrology of the Great Basin.
