Redwater River winds through the southeastern corner of this McCone County landscape, serving as a primary drainage for the surrounding prairie. This 2014 survey captures a wide network of intermittent streams, including Duck Cr in the north and the diverging N Fork Buffalo Cr and S Fork Buffalo Cr to the south. The terrain is characterized by the complex coulees and ridges that feed into Buffalo Cr, which eventually joins the larger Redwater system. Human activity is centered on a sparse grid of rural routes such as Buffalo Creek Rd and Spring Rd, reflecting the ranching and agricultural patterns of eastern Montana. In the northeast, the Switzer Reservoir represents a vital water management point for this arid region, while the border of McCone Co and Dawson Co is marked at the eastern edge near Corral Cr.
