The confluence of the North Fork White River and South Fork White River at Buford anchors this portion of the White River National Forest. The landscape is defined by its water management and transit networks, featuring the Marcott Ditch and Beckman Ditch alongside a primitive road system including the New Castle Buford Rd. The area is characterized by high-elevation terrain such as Buford Ridge and Burro Mtn, with the small Flying Dog Ranch Airstrip providing a rare point of modern infrastructure in the valley. Backcountry access is well-documented through a series of established routes like the Peltier Lake Trail, Sterry Lake Trail, and Burro Mountain Trail, which lead into the Peltier Basin and toward numerous alpine water bodies including Harker Park Lake and Bar-Bel Lake.
