The Cumberland River carves a winding path through this portion of Cumberland County, defining the local geography with its deep bends and fertile bottomlands. These river-bottom plains, including Clay Lick Bottom and Howards Bottom, provided critical agricultural space in a landscape otherwise dominated by high ridges and hollows. The county seat, Burkesville, sits at a major bend in the river, connected to the surrounding countryside by the Burkesville Bridge and a network of roads that follow the old ferry routes, such as Bakerton Ferry Rd.
