The small settlement of Burns sits at the southern edge of this Colorado landscape, where the Colorado River begins to cut through the high terrain of the White River National Forest. The geography here is defined by a transition from the elevated Derby Mesa and King Mtn down into deep drainage cuts like Pump Gulch and Fargo Gulch. Water management is evident through the presence of the S Derby Ditch and the high-altitude Winslow Reservoir in the northeast.
