From Bonny Eagle down to Bar Mills and Union Falls, the river’s drop provided the energy for the region's timber and textile economies. This topography, surveyed in 1889 by W.H. Lovell under the direction of Marcus Baker, reveals a landscape where water and rail connectivity dictated development.

The Portland and Rochester Railroad cuts a diagonal path through the lower half of the map, linking rural outposts like South Hollis and East Waterboro to broader markets. Cultural landmarks of note include the Shaker Village at the edge of Alfred and numerous small hamlets such as Nasons Mills and Goodwins Mills. The terrain is punctuated by significant heights like Ossipee Hill and Isinglass Hill, overlooking the basins of Little Ossipee Pond and Watchic Pond.
