Lolo National Forest land dominates this high-elevation terrain in Missoula County, where a complex network of ridgelines and drainages defines the western Montana landscape. The hydrology of the region is centered on the headwaters of several critical tributaries, most notably Grave Cr and its secondary branch, E Fork Grave Cr, which carve deep incisions through the mountain slopes. To the northeast, O'Brien Cr drains toward lower elevations, while E Fork Petty Cr marks the northwestern boundary of the study area. This 2014 survey documents the modern forest management and access routes within the public land system, illustrating the preservation of these critical watersheds and the steep, forested divide between the Petty and Grave Creek drainages.
