Sequoia National Forest encompasses the northern portion of this landscape, where the Scodie Mountains rise between Cane Canyon and the surrounding desert basins. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail winds along the high eastern ridges, passing near Skinner Peak and Wyleys Knob before descending toward Bird Spring Pass. This area is defined by its critical water sources in an otherwise arid environment, marked by numerous named springs such as Cochran Spring, Yellow Jacket Spring, and Mustang Spring.
