Yellowstone National Park and the Shoshone National Forest converge in this high-elevation corner of the Absaroka Range. The landscape is defined by the sharp drainage systems of the N Fork Crandall Cr and Miller Cr, which carve through the steep terrain.

A network of backcountry routes provides the only passage through this wilderness, including the Canoe Lake Trl leading to its namesake Canoe Lake, and the Bootjack Gap Trl traversing the southern boundary. This 2021 survey illustrates a region largely untouched by modern development, where the historical boundaries of the first national park meet the protected forests of Wyoming.
