Hatteras Island forms a thin, sandy barrier between the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound in this mid-century coastal study. The landscape is defined by the sharp elbow of Cape Hatteras and its southern extension at Cape Point, where the shifting shoreline protects the waters of Hatteras Bight. On the interior of the island, a single Telephone Line runs parallel to the coast, connecting the settlement of Frisco to the maritime infrastructure of the Coast Guard Sta.

Evidence of local community life appears at Little Grove Ch, while the surrounding terrain is marked by dunes and coastal elevations such as Creeds Hill. Large portions of the land are preserved within Cape Hatteras State Park, reflecting the early efforts of the U.S. Geological Survey and Coast and Geodetic Survey to document this volatile maritime environment before modern development significantly altered the Outer Banks shoreline.
