The San Juan River and Piedra River converge at the northern reaches of the Navajo Reservoir in this high-desert landscape along the Colorado and New Mexico border. The settlement of Carracas sits at the southern edge of the sheet, positioned near the entrance of Sandoval Canyon and the prominent Carracas Rim. This area is defined by a series of mesas and canyons, including Sandoval Mesa and Deep Canyon, which drop away into the river valley.
