The waters of Lake Francis Case define the southwestern edge of this landscape, where the Missouri River's impoundment meets the gridded agricultural lands of Charles Mix County. This 2012 survey illustrates a transition from the riparian bluffs and inlets of the reservoir to the organized section lines of the plains. The small settlement of Castalia is a focal point for local history, supported by the presence of Castalia Cem to the north and Friesland Cem further east. A network of seasonal drainages, including Platte Cr, Edgerton Cr, and Dry Cr, carve through the terrain, dictated by the regional topography. Transportation is anchored by S Dakota Hwy 1804, which runs north-south, connecting isolated farmsteads across a landscape primarily defined by its hydrology and cemeteries.
