The Continental Divide winds through this high-altitude landscape in New Mexico, marking the hydrologic backbone of the region. The terrain is defined by volcanic features and high-desert basins, protected within the Cibola National Forest and the northern reaches of the West Malpais Wilderness. Prominent peaks like Cerro Hueco, Cerro Negro, and Cerro Americano rise above a series of ephemeral water bodies known as lagunas, including Laguna Larga and Laguna Americana.
