Chaffee and the surrounding Scott County landscape are defined by a complex network of water management features and small rail-side settlements. The northern portion of the map is dominated by the Castor River Diversion Channel, a significant engineering work that altered the natural hydrology of the Southeast Lowlands. Evidence of the area's original drainage remains visible in the winding path of the Old Channel Hubble Creek and the Old Caney Basin.
