Pawnee National Grassland dominates the southern half of this landscape, reflecting the conservation of the high plains ecosystem in northern Colorado. The terrain is defined by the striking escarpments of the Chalk Bluffs and landmarks like Squaw Rock, which rise above the surrounding prairie. This area serves as a critical watershed for several intermittent streams, including the north-flowing Simpson Cr and Little Simpson Cr, alongside the N Fork Geary Cr which winds through the central breaks. To the northeast, the Eagle Rock Reservoir and the deep incision of Bull Canyon highlight the topographical variety found at the edge of the plains. A network of county roads, such as Co RD 57 and Co RD 128, provides access to these public lands, marking the intersection of modern recreation and traditional rangeland.
