Shenandoah National Park dominates the eastern half of this landscape, where the Skyline Drive snakes along high ridges and through numerous mountain passes. This high-altitude terrain is defined by a series of prominent gaps, including Chester Gap, Jenkins Gap, Compton Gap, and Thoroughfare Gap, which have long served as vital transit points through the Blue Ridge. To the west, the land descends toward the Gooney Run drainage, where rural settlements and agricultural operations like Glenway Farm and Curl Farm are situated along the valley floor.
