Rising to nearly ten thousand feet at Chiricahua Peak, the area served as a critical hub for forest management and recreation, evidenced by the Turkey Cr Ranger Sta and numerous sites like Bathtub Forest Camp.

Lower elevations transition into the Sulphur Spring Valley, where small ranching outposts like Winkler Ranch and Dart Ranch mark the western edge of the mountain range. This era of the landscape is defined by its isolation and specialized land use, from the El Tigre Mine and Hilltop in the northeast to the spiritual retreat at Methodist Camp. The network of springs, such as Anita Spring and Mormon Spring, provided vital water sources for the cattle operations and forest stations scattered through these deep canyons.
