About this map

Cimarron sits at the base of the mountains where the high plains meet the Sangre de Cristo foothills, serving as a hub for the sprawling Beaubien and Miranda Grant. This mid-century survey captures the region's transition from a coal-mining powerhouse to a ranching landscape. To the northeast, the settlement of Dawson is shown alongside remnants of its industrial past, including the Lauretta Mine, Tailings, and an Powerhouse (Aband). The intricate network of canyons, such as Chase and Van Bremmer, illustrates the complex drainage into the Vermejo River. Water management is evident through features like the French Lake and No 2 Lake, which supported the livestock operations at the W S Ranch. Traces of earlier infrastructure remain visible, including an Old Railroad Grade that once connected these isolated mining camps to broader markets.
