Cochiti Lake sits at the heart of this landscape, where modern water management meets a high desert terrain defined by deep incisions and volcanic plateaus. To the north, the Bandelier National Monument and Bandelier Wilderness preserve a complex network of drainages including Alamo Canyon, Hondo Canyon, and Capulin Canyon, which drop sharply toward the Rio Grande. This reach of the river flows through the dramatic White Rock Canyon, separating the wilderness areas from the high Caja del Rio Plateau to the east.
