Gunnison National Forest land dominates this high-altitude landscape, where livestock management and water rights define the geography. The western portion of the sheet is marked by the McDonough Ranch and the nearby Old Agency Work Center, situated along the winding course of Los Pinos Creek. This area preserves evidence of early ranching infrastructure, including the McDonough Reservoir No 2 and a lonely grave site near the junction of mountain trails.

The eastern drainage basin shows a sophisticated network of irrigation systems necessary for high-country agriculture, including the Smith Ford Ditch, Perry Ditch, and the Tarbell and Alexander Ditch. These man-made channels contrast with the natural flow of Cochetopa Creek. Transportation is largely restricted to rugged routes like the Pinos-Cibolla Road and the Simmons Trail, which navigate the various basins and gulches such as Basin Gulch and Poison Gulch.
