To the west, the steep terrain of the Toiyabe National Forest rises toward Mineral Mountain and Centennial Bluff. This area shows a distinct history of resource extraction, highlighted by the Golden Gate Mine and numerous Prospect sites scattered along Napoleon Canyon. A series of pack trails and unimproved roads connect the high alpine flats, such as Rodriguez Flat, to the settled valley floor, illustrating the transit patterns between the river-fed lowlands and the mineral-rich eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada.
