Death Valley National Monument dominates this mid-1980s terrain study, where the desert floor meets the rising peaks of the Black Mountains and Owlshead Mountains. The ephemeral Amargosa River cuts through the basin, constrained by the geological formation known as The Narrows. Industrial history is represented by the Confidence Mill (Site), located at the northern edge of the Confidence Hills. This landscape is defined by its drainage patterns, with Rhodes Wash and Confidence Wash carrying runoff from the heights. To the west, the topographic detail follows the deep incisions of Granite Canyon and Through Canyon, illustrating the intense erosion processes typical of this arid region near the Inyo and San Bernardino county line.
