About this map

Totopitk and Chiapuk sit at the desert floor of a basin-and-range landscape where Pinal, Maricopa, and Pima counties meet. The desert hydrology is defined by seasonal watercourses like Kohatk Wash, Kaka Wash, and Bitter Well Wash, which drain the surrounding mountain ranges and gather in the wide Kohatk Valley and Kaka Valley. This 2021 survey shows a terrain of dramatic relief, anchored by the Vekol Mountains to the east and the Cimarron Mountains to the south. Distinctive landmarks such as Cathedral Rock and the Copperosity Hills provide vertical contrast to the sprawling valley floor. Transportation through this arid region is primarily limited to Indian Rte 242, which navigates the gap between the various mountain groups, connecting the small settlements through the vast Sonoran landscape.
