Cottonwood Cem sits as a lonely landmark in this high plains landscape of Hill County, where the topography is defined by the deep drainage patterns of the Cottonwood Coulee system. The area is marked by a series of dramatic coulees, including Redrock Coulee, Willow Coulee, and Staton Coulee, which carve through the plains. This 2014 survey shows the intersection of the modern transportation corridor along MT-232 with a network of rural roads such as Road 365 N and Road 160 N. The landscape is organized by the Public Land Survey System grid, with section lines crossing through Dog Coulee and Carske Coulee. The pattern of drainage towards the East Fork Cottonwood Coulee illustrates the essential role of water movement in shaping the geography of north-central Montana.
