The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail winds through a high-elevation backcountry where three major wilderness areas converge at the borders of Pierce, Yakima, and Lewis counties. This 2017 survey shows the trail crossing Carlton Pass and following the ridgeline west of Cougar Lake and Little Cougar Lake. The drainage patterns are clearly defined, with the American River flowing northward and the Bumping River feeding into the northwestern reach of Bumping Lake.
