The Mayacmas Mountains dominate the western portion of this Mendocino and Lake County border region, characterized by steep elevation changes and a complex drainage network. To the east, the landscape transitions toward the Blue Lakes system, where The Narrows separates the upper waters from Lower Blue Lake. These natural basins are vital hydrological features in a terrain otherwise defined by the high ridges of Cow Mountain and the Cow Mountain Ridge.

Settlement patterns remain sparse, focused on small clearings like Forty-Acre Opening and the northern site of Cooper. Transportation is dictated by the geography, with the Old State Hwy and Blue Lakes Rd following the lower contours near the water, while the Glen Eden Trl and Laurel Dell Rd provide access into the higher backcountry. Numerous seasonal and permanent water sources, such as Black Oak Springs and Scotts Cr, feed into the larger watersheds of the N Fork Mill Cr and Willow Cr.
