About this map

The Mayacmas Mountains dominate this high-relief landscape along the border of Mendocino and Lake counties, characterized by a complex network of steep ridges and creek drainage basins. The high point of Cow Mtn and the distinct Cow Mtn Ridge anchor the topography, with clearings such as the Forty-Acre Opening providing breaks in the terrain. At the eastern edge, the waters of Blue Lakes narrow at The Narrows, where Blue Lakes Rd follows the shoreline near the small settlement of Cooper. This modern survey illustrates the persistent isolation of the interior heights, where numerous watercourses like Scotts Cr, Sulphur Creek, and McClure Cr descend from peaks like Shell Peak and Little Cow Mtn. Evidence of early access remains through named routes like Old Lake Co Rd and the Glen Eden Trl winding through the southern slopes.
