The high plains of eastern New Mexico define the landscape around Cuervo, a small settlement positioned along the transportation corridor that includes the Frontage Rd and Interstate 40. This 2010 survey illustrates the ranching and livestock infrastructure essential to this arid region, marked by numerous named water sources such as Gonzales Windmill, Twin Windmill, and Ferguson Windmill. The topography is dominated by the steep rises of Cuervito Peak, Mesita Contadero, and the wide expanse of Cuervo Mesa. Local history is anchored by the Cuervo Post Office and two nearby burial grounds, Cuervo Cemetery and San Cristobal Cemetery, which sit south of the main road. Drainage patterns for the area are established by Cuervo Creek and Cuervito Creek, flowing through the broken terrain toward the south and east.
